By S.E.T. Editorial Team Published August 30, 2026 12 min read
Bottom Line: The Mooncool TK2 is a folding electric trike with a 500W helical motor (1,092W peak), 48V 15Ah removable battery, up to 75 miles of pedal-assist range, hydraulic disc brakes, reverse mode, and a 450 lb capacity — all for $1,499 (sale from $2,099). It folds to 39″ × 29″ × 27″ and charges from any standard outlet or solar generator. UL 2849 certified. Best for: commuters, seniors, RVers, and anyone who needs stability without sacrificing portability.

Who Is the TK2 Built For?

Mooncool’s TK2 sits in the sweet spot between their flagship TK Pro and the off-road FT1. It’s the commuter pick — designed for people who need a stable, foldable ride for errands, neighborhoods, bike paths, and light recreational use.

It works especially well for:

What Makes the TK2 Stand Out

1. It Actually Folds

A lot of “folding” e-bikes barely shrink. The TK2 folds down to 39.4 × 28.7 × 26.8 inches — compact enough for a car trunk, RV storage bay, or apartment closet. The folding mechanism has been tested for 100,000+ cycles, and hidden cable routing means nothing snags or kinks when you fold.

2. Reverse Mode

This is genuinely useful. Hit reverse on the controller and the TK2 backs up at 2.5 MPH. In tight driveways, parking lots, or when you overshoot a parking spot, you don’t have to awkwardly drag 90 lbs of trike backwards. This is a feature most e-trikes skip, and it makes the TK2 dramatically easier to live with.

3. Rear Differential

Most budget trikes have a solid rear axle — both wheels turn at the same speed, which makes corners feel unstable and tippy. The TK2 has a forged alloy rear differential that lets each rear wheel spin independently. This is the same principle that makes cars corner smoothly. It makes the TK2 feel planted and predictable in turns.

4. Hydraulic Disc Brakes with E-Cutoff

Mechanical disc brakes require more hand pressure and wear faster. The TK2 uses hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors front and rear. They stop hard with minimal hand effort — important for riders with arthritis or limited grip strength. The e-cutoff instantly kills motor power when you pull either brake lever.

5. 3.5″ Color TFT Display (1,500 nits)

Most e-trikes have a cheap LCD that washes out in sunlight. The TK2 has a full-color TFT display at 1,500 nits with anti-reflective coating. It shows speed, battery percentage, range estimate, assist level, and trip data — all visible in direct sun. IPX5 water resistant.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Genuine folding frame — fits car trunks and RV bays
  • Reverse mode saves you from wrestling 90 lbs backwards
  • Rear differential makes corners feel planted
  • Hydraulic disc brakes — easy on arthritic hands
  • 75-mile range on pedal assist covers any errand run
  • Removable battery — charge indoors, swap easily
  • 1,500-nit display readable in direct sunlight
  • UL 2849 certified — fire/electrical safety tested
  • Front + rear baskets included
  • $600 off at current sale price

❌ Cons

  • 90.4 lbs — heavy to lift into vehicles without a ramp
  • 15.5 MPH top speed is slow for bike lanes with fast traffic
  • Single speed — no gearing for steep hills (the motor compensates, but pedaling feels harder)
  • 6–8 hour charge time on standard charger (fast charger sold separately)
  • Currently sold out — check availability

Solar Charging the TK2

This is where the S.E.T. Solar angle comes in. The TK2’s battery is 720Wh (48V × 15Ah). Here’s the math:

If you ride 10–15 miles daily and charge with solar, your transportation cost drops to $0. No gas, no insurance, no registration. That’s the off-grid mobility loop.

Our take: The TK2 is the best value for flat-to-moderate terrain riding. It’s $200 cheaper than the TK Pro and adds reverse mode + the upgraded color display. If you ride hills or need maximum range, the TK Pro’s bigger motor and battery justify the upgrade. If you need fat tires for sand/gravel/mud, get the FT1.

What’s in the Box

Assembly takes about 15–20 minutes. Attach the handlebars, baskets, pedals, and backrest. Everything else is pre-wired.

Safety & Certification

The TK2 is UL 2849 certified through SGS — the most rigorous e-bike safety standard in the US. This covers electrical safety, battery integrity, and fire resistance. Not every e-trike on Amazon has this. It also means the TK2 meets the latest Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.

Final Verdict

The Mooncool TK2 does what a lot of electric trikes promise but don’t deliver: it actually folds, actually has enough range, and actually feels stable in corners. At $1,499 (currently $600 off), it’s the best mid-range folding trike we’ve tested.

It’s not for everyone — the 15.5 MPH top speed won’t keep up with fast bike-lane traffic, and 90 lbs is heavy to lift unassisted. But for neighborhood errands, bike paths, campground cruising, and getting around an off-grid property, it delivers exactly what you need without overcomplicating things.

Pair it with a solar generator and a 200W panel, and you’ve got zero-cost transportation for life.
